The Vox Grata Women’s Choir has announced its Spring Concert – Operation Sing: A Musical Protest Against Human Trafficking.
Two concerts will be held:
• Tuesday, May 9 at Second Presbyterian Church, 3511 Belmont Blvd, Nashville, TN
• Thursday, May 18 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3900 West End Avenue, Nashville, TN
The concert will include choral works addressing the issue of slavery, featuring an extended work entitled “Reasons for the Perpetuation of Slavery” by American composer, Elizabeth Alexander. This compelling piece is a powerful musical protest against slavery in all its forms – in the past, present and foreseeable future. The program will also include works by Stephen Paulus, Joan Szymko, Daniel J. Hall, Rosephanye Powell, Kim Andre Arnesen and Michael Torke.

Vox Grata will be co-conducted by Jeanette MacCallum and Associate Conductor Dr. Susan Kelly, and will be accompanied by Dr. John Semingson, Director of Music Ministries at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nashville. Composer Alexander will attend the concert on May 9 and provide a pre-concert talk about the music.
There will be no charge for admission to these concerts, both of which start at 7 p.m. Vox Grata Women’s Choir is unique among choral groups, in that all of its concerts directly benefit the needs of women in the Middle Tennessee area. Vox Grata has selected End Slavery TN to receive all of the proceeds received from an offering at this event. Founded in 2008, the mission of End Slavery TN is to promote healing of human trafficking survivors and strategically confront slavery in Tennessee through Training, Aftercare Advocacy and Prevention. “Someone said ‘Where words leave off, music begins’,” said Derri Smith, Founder and CEO of End Slavery TN. “There are no words to express the pain and damage caused to girls and women through human trafficking. The music of Vox Grata connects us not only to the ashes of pain, but also to the beauty of hope, healing and joy.”

Vox Grata is a women’s choir founded and directed by Jeanette MacCallum in 2012. The choir is comprised of joyful women who, out of gratitude for the fullness of their own lives, possess a desire to sing together for the benefit of others. The group performs repertoire that expresses a uniquely feminine spirit, especially works that promote the best interests of
women in society.
