SALT SPRING ISLAND, CANADA — Students between the ages of eight and 13 have an opportunity to begin their school year with a song thanks to the formation of Viva Voce! Youth, a new choir organizers hope will spread a love of music and broader understanding of the world.
“Developing music at a young age gives a life-long understanding of the human voice as an instrument. The exposure to music from many different cultures teaches us the benefits of cultural curiosity,” said Debbi Toole, the choir’s director. “Learning in a choral setting as a young person fosters the chance of personal and social growth and promotes a sense of self-esteem, discipline, accomplishment and pride.”
