New Year, New Sounds

Hot off the presses! Our composers have many new pieces to share with you.

The Circus-Day Parade, by Timothy Hoekman
SATB, piano, cornet in Bb | Difficulty: 2
The poem wonderfully captures the children’s excitement when the circus comes to town.

V’higad’ta L’vincha (And You Shall Tell Your Child…) (Full Score and Parts), by Gerald Cohen
SATB, clarinet, cello, piano; also for SATB & piano | Difficulty: 3
A powerful and joyful piece celebrating Passover.

Tayo / Stand, by Tracy Wong
SSA & percussion | Difficulty: 3
If disheartened by the world, turn to music to lift and re-energize one’s spirit.

And none but Love, by Isaac Lovdahl
SATB, piano, optional C instrument | Difficulty: 3
What could be more important than Love?

Naga Trus Madi, by Tracy Wong
SAB & percussion | Difficulty: 4
A fiery composition inspired by the Southeast Asian mythology of dragons as protector of mountains and lands.

Chiaroscuro, by Jennifer Lucy Cook
SATB div. choir, opt. bowed crotales | Difficulty: 5
“Throughout this piece, I explore the extremes of dynamic as you’d expect in a piece about contrast… I hope to find a bit more peace with both the light and the shadow.” -JLC

The things which I have seen… (art song), by Ellen Gilson Voth
Tenor & piano; also for TB choir & piano | Difficulty: 2
Concision, reflection, and thoughtfulness rule this piece, led by the poetry of Wordsworth.

Seeing the same stars (SA), by Ellen Gilson Voth
SA choir & piano | Difficulty: 3
“Each of us / All of us / Under the same stars.” -EGV

For the Daughter I May Never Have (low voice), by Dale Trumbore
Baritone & piano; also for Mezzo-Soprano, SSAA, & TTBB | Difficulty: 4
A piece that is by turns heartfelt, funny, and poignant.

How to Start a Fire: Manifestation, by Reginal Wright
SATB div. choir & piano | Difficulty: 4
“Ultimately, the music arrives in the clarity and courage that come when peace becomes knowing and knowing becomes doing.” -RW

Above Gravity, by Ellen Gilson Voth
SATB div. choir a cappella | Difficulty: 4
“How would our current world be different if our first priority was not our own freedom or well-being, but the good of others?” -EGV

Hope Within (Advanced), by Ellen Gilson Voth
SATB div. choir & piano; also for SATB (non divisi) | Difficulty: 4
“With the voices, the piano part is a co-storyteller, painting water which rises and subsides continuously.” -EGV

From Graphite composer Abbie Betinis:

The Star-Spangled Banner (aka The Star-Spangled Banner Takes a Knee), by Abbie Betinis
SATB a cappella or with piano | Difficulty: 2
An accessible, yet strong political protest statement, this thought-provoking SATB arrangement of the US National Anthem flips its melody upside-down with the same intention as an American ship might flip its flag: to signify “dire distress.”

This piece is unpremiered, so you could be the premiere performance!
Send recordings to Abbie Betinis, or post to YouTube with attribution — no licensing required for free distribution.
