New pieces from

Shara Nova & Joshua Shank!

Spring Hymns, by Shara Nova
SA choir and piano
Difficulty: 1 | Duration: 5-10 min.
Inspired by Benjamin Britten’s Friday Afternoons, these songs are the first in a series entitled Spring Hymns, written to teach young singers melodic independence through call and response, canons, and sustained breath in longer vocal lines. Rather than emphasizing sweetness, these songs celebrate mischief, curiosity, reverence, and the thrill of discovery.

Individual movements available:

How Far Can a Bird Fly?, by Shara Nova
Difficulty: 1 | Duration: less than 3 min.

Laudamus Sancta Matrem, by Shara Nova
Difficulty: 1 | Duration: less than 3 min.

A Thief! A Thief!, by Shara Nova
Difficulty: 1 | Duration: less than 3 min.

Endless Night, by Joshua Shank
Four two-part SA choirs, a cappella
Difficulty: 3 | Duration: less than 3 min.
A shimmering multi-choir arrangement of Silent Night which creates a cloud of luminous choral landscapes.

I Dreamed in a Dream, by Shara Nova
TTBB choir and piano
Difficulty: 3 | Duration: 3-5 min.
How do we dream a city of love into being? Isn’t a city of love one that cares for each other—not just in philosophy, but in practice?

Nacht und Träume, by Joshua Shank
SATB and Piano
Difficulty: 4 | Duration: 3-5 min.
Balancing simplicity with expressive depth, “Nacht” offers choirs an opportunity to explore refined dynamic control and evoke the gentle unfolding of night and dreams.

Undelivered, by Joshua Shank
SATB and percussion
Difficulty: 4 | Duration: 3-5 min.
This work sets John F. Kennedy’s undelivered final speech using speech-like rhythmic writing that closely follows the natural cadence of his words, allowing the choir to embody the act of public address.

Shara Nova is a composer, vocalist, and producer currently creating from Detroit, Michigan. Shara has released six albums under the moniker My Brightest Diamond. In 2024 she starred in the Tony Award Winning musical “Illinoise” on Broadway, directed by Justin Peck, co-written by Jackie Sibblies Drury with music by Sufjan Stevens, with a live album released on Nonesuch Records. Many artists have sought out Nova’s unique vocal work, including David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Suzanne Bocanegra, The Decemberists, Steve Mackey, David Lang, So Percussion, Justin Vernon, Sufjan Stevens, and Tunde Olaniran, as well as Matthew Barney with Jonathan Bepler. Nova has been a guest teacher in composition and performance at Princeton, University of Michigan, Columbus State University Schwob School of Music, NYU, University of North Carolina, University of North Texas and University of Texas in Austin among others. Nova is a 2023 Opera America Discovery Grant awardee, Kresge Arts fellow, a Carolina Performing Arts Creative Futures fellow, a Knights Grant recipient, a United States Artists fellow, and a New Music USA recipient. Three of her projects were nominated for Grammy Awards in 2023.

The music of Boston-based composer Joshua Shank has been called “jubilant…ethereal” (Santa Barbara News-Press), “evocative and atmospheric” (Gramophone), and “emotionally charged” (Boston Classical Review). In 2002, he became the youngest recipient ever of the Raymond W. Brock Composition Award from the American Choral Directors Association. The winning piece, Musica animam tangens, was premiered in Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center, and has since been performed and recorded from Los Angeles to South Africa.  His published works have sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. A fierce advocate for students’ access to music education, he was a public-school teacher in Minneapolis/St. Paul for many years before going on to teach at Gonzaga University, Valley City State University, and Eastern Washington University.  When he’s not writing music, you can probably find him biking, studying vegetarian cooking, or watching hilariously bad movies with his husband, sociologist Robert Ressler.
