New repertoire for Boy Choirs

February 4, 2011 by Tom Cunningham Leave a Comment

The National Youth Choir of Scotland commissioned two new cantatas from Tom Cunningham for the National Boys Choir.

The Saga of the Seven Days consists of one song for each day: Sun, Moon, Tiu, Wodin, Thor, Freya and Saturn.

Seven Planets and a Cosmic Rock has a song for each planet with Pluto as the rock.

The texts by Derek Roberts have been written particularly to appeal to boys but have also been greatly enjoyed by mixed children’s choirs.

The original accompaniment is for piano but both sets have been orchestrated.  Performances with orchestra include the London Symphony Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

You can see the scores and listen to the pieces by following the links on www.tomcunningham.org.uk.

Scores are available from the National Youth Choir of Scotland and can be purchased online.
