New to the Shchedryk Ukrainian Choir Series, “Вийди Іванку / Come Out Ivanko,” by Roman Surzha is a musical fantasy and stylization of folk songs performed in spring, calling for the arrival of the sun and warmth.
With a chorus echoing folk notes of Tchaikovsky, this piece is more than a spring song—it’s a dramatic emotional arc, moving from joyful invocation of the sun and warmth, through playful rituals of wreath-braiding, into a moment of personal heartbreak, and finally returning to the collective hope and resilience of spring.
With driving rhythms, a wide dynamic range, and a diverse texture, “Come Out, Ivanko” invites your singers to call down the sun, shake off the silence of winter, and sing the world into bloom.
