It’s with great pleasure I announce the release of the world premiere recording of a new song cycle, “Gypsy Love Songs,” set to the music of Brahms’ fiery, energetic “Zigeunerlieder,” Op. 103 Nos. 1-11 and Op. 112 Nos. 1-4. I’ve taken all 15 numbers, rearranged their order, written all new period-appropriate-style English poems about the various aspects of love, and expanded the original single-piano accompaniment into a more demanding one for piano four hands, which Brahms didn’t do for these pieces, as he did for the more familiar “Liebeslieder Walzes.” (N.B. While I was in San Francisco Opera Chorus, Maestro Richard Bonynge complimented me on the piano-4-hands version I’d already arranged: “a valuable addition to the repertoire.”)
The vocal quartet is comprised of established San Francisco Bay Area vocal artists. The piano tracks were constructed on my computer.
The CD contains not only the entire song cycle, but as a bonus, the piano tracks, for choral conductors to use either in rehearsal or performance, when a piano duo is not available. Included in the CD case are texts of all 15 poems.
