Music and space

February 5, 2026 by Piroska Horváth Leave a Comment

Have you ever wondered why a certain piece of music fits better in one room than another?
Acoustics play a big part, of course; but there is so much more to it than that.

Visuality is more important to a concert than one would think. The lights and decorative elements of the stage and the concert place could enhance or contrast the feelings evoked by the music. Not only for the audience but for the performer too.

Think of a piece of sacred music, revered and slow. Think about singing it at a concert – think of the most ideal concert place you would want to perform it. Your mind maybe recalls the image and sounds of a cathedral: high walls and pillars with majestic decorations; and the sounds of the music play among them, bouncing around the church hall, echoing even in the farthest corners, ringing for a few eternal-feeling seconds even after the music has finished.

Now think of, let’s say, Ode to Joy by Beethoven. How does the scene change? Are you maybe in a concert hall now, a large auditorium with rows of balconies, neutrally light colours dominating – the most typical classical music concert environment?

Let us switch genres again – now let your mind recall a pop arrangement performed with an a cappella group. Suddenly, you have a microphone in your hand, are walking and dancing around on a stage, enjoying your voice.

We at meeting music always pay attention to select the most suitable places for different competition category concerts and other activities. At our festivals, you can try performing in

– basilicas – like Santa Croce in Gerusalemme during Musica Eterna a Roma
– large concert halls – for example at Müpa Budapest as part of the unified International Festival Choir at Laurea Mundi
– smaller and thereby more intimate-feeling performance rooms – in the framework of Friendship Concerts at any of our festivals
– and sometimes even open-air concerts!
