Karl Bodenbender, 39, of Rock Island, sang with the choir in the 1980s; his brothers Kurt and Andy were members, too, as was their dad, Arthur. Bodenbender said he is looking forward to serving an organization “that gave me so much.” He added that he is “humbled to take over from Mr. Wells and in awe of the way he has led.”
Bodenbender’s musical gifts were apparent at an early age. In addition to singing in the choir, he became the organist and choir accompanist at what is now Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Moline when he was a junior in high school. He studied vocal music at Northwestern University in Evanston and received a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from The Cleveland Institute of Music, which is among the top conservatories in the country.
