WAUSAU, WI — Karen Haines, former choral director for D.C.
Everest Senior High School, received the Morris D. Hayes Lifetime
Achievement Award on Jan. 21 at the Wisconsin Choral Directors
Association state convention in Green Bay.
The Morris D. Hayes Award is given to Wisconsin residents who
show a commitment to choral music through teaching, conducting or
service and has made outstanding contributions to choral music in
Wisconsin.
“It’s not given out every year. It’s always really, really
outstanding people who really deserve it,” said Cristie Bates, the
current choral director at D.C. Everest Senior High School.
Haines served as choral director for the school for 45 years and
retired in 2008. Although she received many awards during her
tenure, Haines said her greatest reward was “fostering the love of
music in her students.”
“This is evidenced by the hundreds of students who have been
accepted in their college choirs, have become music educators
themselves and have participated in church choirs, community
theater and the Wausau Lyric Choir,” Haines said in a press
release.
