In this new program, the Choir of King’s College London presents a selection of lesser-known choral treasures from Britain. In what is probably its first US performances, Gustav Holst’s ‘Dream Tryst’ conveys the mystical sound world that would soon find him fame with The Planets. Gerald Finzi’s Seven Poems of Robert Bridges are well loved in the UK but less well known in the US, and contain several beautiful gems, while John Rutter’s Birthday Madrigals feature the popular choral composer wearing a slightly jazzy hat as he sets these Shakespearean texts. The choir pairs these partsong settings with Frank Martin’s beautiful Mass for Double Choir, which they have just recorded to critical acclaim, Gramophone Magazine concluding: ‘this is a performance of astonishing intensity and musicality’.
