Interview: Gerald Wirth, Vienna Boys Choir

April 22, 2012 by Richard Allen Roe Leave a Comment

HONG KONG — Founded in 1498, the Vienna Boys Choir has worked with some of the most well-known classical composers and musicians of our time, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biberis and Antonio Salieri in the past.

On that note, we are thrilled to learn about the Choir’s rare visit in Hong Kong and jumped at the opportunity to speak with the Vienna Boys Choir’s artistic director Gerald Wirth, who received training at the choir as a boy. Ahead of the Choir’s exclusive Vienna Gala which includes a mini concert, by three of his young choristers, on April 22, to promote the city of Vienna, Gerald Wirth shares with Asia Tatler his views on the classical music scene in Hong Kong and Asia, while also touching on the history of the choir.

Asia Tatler: Can you tell our readers a little about your background and how you came to work with the Vienna Boys Choir?

Gerald Wirth: I have been a member of the Vienna Boys Choir myself and I studied the oboe, piano and voice before becoming one of the youngest conductors of the Vienna Boys Choir.

I worked as chorus director at the Landestheater Salzburg before moving to Canada to join the Calgary Boys Choir, Canadian Choral Music School and Calgary Civic Symphony. After moving back to Vienna I was honoured to have received the offer to lead the artistic leadership of the Vienna Boys Choir.
