On Tuesday, June 21, Henry Leck, Founder and Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Children's Choir conducted the premiere of a new major work written by Award winning Bulgarian composer Georgi Andreev. "Melancholy Beauty" written for adult choir, Bulgarian women's choir, Bulgarian folk instruments, children's choir, full orchestra, soloists and narrator, depicts the incredible story of the rescue of 49,000 Jews of Bulgaria during World War II.
Presented by Songs of Life Founders: Kalin and Sharon Tchonev of Varna International, this work which premiered in Kennedy Center included soloists Neli Atanasova Andreev, Charles David Osborne and David Kravitz. Singers of the Indianapolis Children's Choir; Khorikos of New York; Victor Valley Coollege Singers of CA; Master Arts Chorale of Victorville, CA; National Philharmonic Chorale; and George Mason University Singers of Washington D.C. were joined by singers and players of the world renowned Philip Kutev National Folklore Ensemble and the National Philharmonic Orchestra.
Conductors Jesse Mark Peckham, Stan Engebretson, Thomas E. Miller, Georgi Andreev, Joshua Pedde and Henry Leck were involved in the preparation and performance of this work.
On Thursday, June 23, the work was presented again in Boston at the Wang Theater with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. On Sunday, June 26 at 3:00 pm "Melancholy Beauty" will be performed again at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center with the National Philharmonic Orchestra.
This compelling work with it poignant message incorporates the haunting sounds of Bulgaria along with colorful orchestration, traditional melodies and beautiful singing.
