I had several conversations with Maestro Salamunovich during my tenure with Collegium Records.
He held John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers in the highest regard for their expert understanding and
performances of Greagorian chant.

Because Paul was a Protégé of Roger Wagner and was inexorably tited to the Master Chorale from its
beginning, having been a founding member and Assistant Conductor from its inception: And although
Roger Wagner had lobbied that Paul would be come the leader of the LA Master Chorale it took until 1991
that he finally took the post.

Paul Salamunovich and the St. Charles Choir were specifically and formally invited to sing for the
Feasts of Saints Peter and Paul with the Pope as the Celebrant of the high M ass in St. Peter’s Square.
It is difficult to cover the creative production of a career of such a master musician and educator
in just one hour, but here are just three points. In the 1960’s and 70’s Paul garnered several Film Credits by
conducting the choral music on more than 100 filmscores like Air Force One; PeterPan; and The Godfather.
Paul Salamunovich conducted just under 1000 festivals and workshops around the world including an unprecedented four consecutive ACDA National Conventions—all with different groups.
As artitic Director of the LA Master Chorale he would commission Choral Works from outstanding Composers.
Morten Lauridsen who served as the Chorale’s Composer in Residence from 1995 to 2001. His critically
acclaimed choral blockbuster, “Lux Aeterna,” “O Magnum Mysterium” and “Ave Maria,” all written for the chorus,
are among the works included in the Chorale’s 1998 Grammy nominated best selling recording of Lux Aeterna
conducted by Paul Salamunovich. I could not think of no better salute to this Choral Icon than to play the entire CD Lux Aeterna. This CD contains eleven choral hits by Lauridsen beside the “Lux Aeterna.“
