High Flight in Scandinavia, and new recording

April 24, 2010 by Christopher Marshall Leave a Comment

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth…..
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

High Flight , the evocative setting for choir and saxophone of John Magee’s famous poem will soon be en route to Scandinavia!

The Anderson University Chorale under director Richard Sowers and with Rebecca Chappell on alto saxophone has already performed this piece eleven times in five states.
  • Here is their beautiful performance in The Church of God in Anderson IN on March 21st (easy direct download!)
  • You may download a perusal score and read reviews of High Flight on this page.

Now, after a farewell performance in their home base, the Chorale set off on tour to Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Here is their itinerary:

  • Sunday, April 25, 7:00 pm St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Carmel, Indiana
  • Tuesday, May 11, 19.00 Tampereen tuomiokirkko (Cathedral), Tampere, Finland
  • Wednesday, May 12, 17.00 Lakeuden risti, Seinäjoki, Finland
  • Friday, May 14, 19.00 Vaasa International Choir Festival, Vaasa, Finland
  • Saturday, May 15, 19.00 Temppeliaukion kirkko (Rock Church), Helsinki, Finland
  • Sunday, May 16, 18.00 Vihti Kirkko, Vihti, Finland
  • Wednesday, May 19, 12.00 Maria Magdalena kyrka, Stockholm, Sweden
  • Thursday, May 20, 19.00 Sofiakyrkan, Jönköping, Sweden
  • Saturday, May 22, 15.00 Trinitatis Kirke, Copenhagen, Denmark

High Flight is the official poem of the NASA space program. This setting was commissioned by Gregory Ruffer and The Orlando Chorale in 2009 as a tribute to John Perkins. It has since had fourteen performances by four choirs.
