New Haven, CT – March 17, 2014 – For the fifth consecutive year, the Greater New Haven Community Chorus will offer the GNHCC Choral Conducting Assistant Scholarship. The program presents a remarkable opportunity for a university or college student who is interested in the art of choral conducting. Applicants should currently be enrolled in a local college, community college, or university studying in an undergraduate or a graduate music degree program, and have a strong interest in choral music, conducting, and teaching. The recipient will gain real-world, hands-on experience through weekly interaction with a large chorus of varying levels and ability and a smaller, auditioned chamber choir.
The recipient, under the mentorship and direction of the Artistic Director, will increase analysis and score study skills, gain invaluable experience “on the podium,” refine rehearsal technique and performance practice, enhance knowledge of vocal pedagogy, as well as assist in the daily administration and artistic direction of the organization.
The scholarship and participation is a rare opportunity for young aspiring conductors. The friendly and welcoming environment of GNHCC, along with the energetic and passionate approach of Artistic Director Noah Blocker-Glynn, only increase the value of this experience.
Spencer Cromwell (Yale ’12), GNHCC’s first scholarship recipient stated, “After being granted so much time on the podium, I feel more comfortable and confident in my abilities to lead a productive rehearsal. We have worked on incredibly difficult repertoire that would be a challenge for any professional chorus, and have performed this music on a very high level. The mentorship I have received from this program has been invaluable.”
The term of this paid scholarship runs from August 2014 through June 2015 and is divided into two sequential semesters: Fall Semester (September – mid-December), and Spring Semester (January – mid-June).
