Splendid recording of première of this new setting of the Gloria by Gordon Thornett, from ‘Christmas in the Basilica’ concert by the Bel Canto Chorus, Milwaukee, conducted by Richard Hynson. Performed with great verve and enthusiasm. https://soundcloud.com/gtbham/gloria-in-d-for-soprano-soloist-mixed-chorus-brass-organ-and-timps
This 10-minute piece starts in 7/8 time with the soloist and chorus being used antiphonally. A more reflective and impassioned middle section for the soloist (“Qui tollis peccata mundi”) leads to a recapitulation of the opening theme, followed by a lively fugal section, which brings the piece triumphant ending.
