This song is a monument to current times, and the themes are universal and timeless. The text transcends the global pandemic and explores how we can make progress against hate, fear, and isolation. Voth embeds traditional melodies into the piece with a seamless and integral nature. Fragments of the traditional hymn and tune, “How Can I Keep from Singing” gradually emerge.

Composed in a dramatic, almost operatic style, the piano evokes various images, such as a fluttering sail (or heart?) and tremulous waves (and nerves?).
Active as a conductor and composer, Dr. Ellen Gilson Voth is proud to be aligned with Graphite Publishing. She credits her years of teaching experience and her performing experience as a keyboard artist as important influences on her composing career, and her passion for writing for the human voice. She has been praised for music that is “superbly crafted,” and her wide-ranging interest in poetry is reflected in her art song settings championed by professional singers throughout New England.
Inspired by captivating narrative, speculative fiction and making better humans through art, the music of Timothy C. Takach is a mainstay in the concert world. Takach was a co-founder, singer and Artistic Co-Director of the vocal ensemble Cantus and has frequent national work as a composer-in-residence, presenter, clinician and lecturer. Applauded for his melodic lines, thoughtful text choices and rich, intriguing harmonies, he has received many commissions and frequently designs cross-disciplinary collaborations.
