In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I am offering scores of my setting of When the Saints Go Marching In for free duplication and performance until September 1, 2016.
This a cappella setting for SATB choir (also available for SSAA) is unique in that it sets the melody in a more lyrical and sustained style than is typically associated with the tune. The interplay between contrapuntal lines results in pentatonic, quartal, and non-traditional harmonies.
It also uses lesser-known lines from the text:
“Oh when the sun refused to shine…
And when our leaders learn to cry…
And when we all have food to eat…
Oh when the stars begin to shine…”
And when our leaders learn to cry…
And when we all have food to eat…
Oh when the stars begin to shine…”
The final verse, “Oh when the saints go marching in”, is paired with the hymn Abide With Me and sung over ostinati in the lower voice parts.
Please feel free to e-mail me at jamesludwig32(a)gmail.com if you would like a perusal score and MIDI recording with authorization to duplicate during this academic year.
