Frances Farrell wins Chor Leoni’s inaugural competition

February 22, 2017 by Bruce Hoffman Leave a Comment

Halifax composer Frances Farrell has won first prize in Chor Leoni’s inaugural C/4 Canadian Choral Composition Competition. Described by the composer as a secular work appropriate for the winter season, Winter Proverbs is an unaccompanied four-movement composition for male choir, and is Farrell’s first composition.

The Judge’s Panel of choral conductor Morna Edmundson, VSO composer-in-residence Jocelyn Morlock, and businessman James Carter awarded Farrell the $2000 first prize.

Congratulations also go out to Nicholas Ryan Kelly whose Evening Song for male choir and piano placed second, and to Bonnie Penfound, whose setting of The Sea to the Shore, with poetry by Lucy Maude Montgomery, placed third. All finalists travelled to Vancouver to hear their works in rehearsal, attend the premiere, and to receive financial prizes.

These compositions will also be performed at Chor Leoni’s upcoming BC/BALTICA concerts, April 7th and 8th at Vancouver’s Dunbar Ryerson United Church (formerly known as Ryerson United Church), and on April 9th at West Vancouver United Church.

Chor Leoni’s C/4 attracted thirty-six entries from across Canada, and the premiere performance sold out in July. The competition was generously supported by James and Leslie Carter, with accommodation generously supplied by the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre.

Plans are already underway for C/4 2018, and submissions may be sent to . Full details will be available in March 2017.
