Edward Maclary to lead OBF Master Class in Conducting

October 22, 2013 by George Evano Leave a Comment

Edward Maclary, one of the country’s top collegiate choral conductors and a nationally regarded clinician and educator, has been appointed to direct the Oregon Bach Festival’s Master Class in Conducting.

Edward MaclaryMaclary, who has studied with Robert Shaw and Helmuth Rilling, will lead students through the day-to-day curriculum of the class. Matthew Halls, the Festival’s new artistic director, and Rilling, director emeritus, will serve as master teachers.

Maclary is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Maryland School of Music. He maintains an active schedule as guest conductor for choral festivals and honors choirs throughout the United States and around the world.

He first collaborated with Matthew Halls preparing performances of Handel’s Messiah in 2011 as part of his UMD choirs’ annual collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. They again work together when Halls conducts the UMD Chamber Singers in works by Purcell, Howells, Britten, and Poulenc at the National Collegiate Choral Organization conference in Charleston, SC November 1.

Maclary has also has served as chorus master for conductors such as Robert Shaw, Iván Fischer, Christoph Eschenbach, and Bobby McFerrin, and in November 2013, will collaborate with Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in performances of the Britten War Requiem.

The Festival’s master class has been its flagship educational program since the event’s founding at the University of Oregon in 1970. The class has more than a thousand alumni leading choral organizations around the world.

A 1985 graduate of the class, Maclary is looking forward to reaching new conductors through the program. “I know what an impact it can have on the musical lives of its participants,” he said. “Working with the players and singers of the Festival and studying under the guidance of Helmuth Rilling was a major turning point in my career. I hope that I might be able to give back to the conducting students of this generation some significant measure of what was given to me.”

The 2014 class takes place June 25-July 13, with curriculum centering on J.S. Bach’s Easter and Ascension Oratorios, and cantatas BWV 4, Christ lag in Todes Banden, and BWV 172, Erschallet, ihr Lieder.

Applications for conducting participants will be accepted beginning November 4, 2013 through %20immediate%20release%2010/22/13Edward%20Maclary,%20one%20of%20the%20country%E2%80%99s%20top%20collegiate%20choral%20conductors%20and%20a%20nationally%20regarded%20clinician%20and%20educator,%20has%20been%20appointed%20to%20direct%20the%20Oregon%20Bach%20Festival%E2%80%99s%20Master%20Class%20in%20Conducting.Maclary,%20who%20has%20studied%20with%20Robert%20Shaw%20and%20Helmuth%20Rilling,%20will%20lead%20students%20through%20the%20day-to-day%20curriculum%20of%20the%20class.%20Matthew%20Halls,%20the%20Festival%E2%80%99s%20new%20artistic%20director,%20and%20Rilling,%20director%20emeritus,%20will%20serve%20as%20master%20teachers.Maclary%20is%20Professor%20of%20Music%20and%20Director%20of%20Choral%20Activities%20at%20the%20University%20of%20Maryland%20School%20of%20Music.%20He%20maintains%20an%20active%20schedule%20as%20guest%20conductor%20for%20choral%20festivals%20and%20honors%20choirs%20throughout%20the%20United%20States%20and%20around%20the%20world.%20He%20first%20collaborated%20with%20Matthew%20Halls%20preparing%20performances%20of%20Handel%E2%80%99s%20Messiah%20in%202011%20as%20part%20of%20his%20UMD%20choirs%E2%80%99%20annual%20collaboration%20with%20the%20National%20Symphony%20Orchestra%20and%20the%20John%20F.%20Kennedy%20Center%20for%20the%20Performing%20Arts.%20They%20again%20work%20together%20when%20Halls%20conducts%20the%20UMD%20Chamber%20Singers%20in%20works%20by%20Purcell,%20Howells,%20Britten,%20and%20Poulenc%20at%20the%20National%20Collegiate%20Choral%20Organization%20conference%20in%20Charleston,%20SC%20November%201.Maclary%20has%20also%20has%20served%20as%20chorus%20master%20for%20conductors%20such%20as%20Robert%20Shaw,%20Iv%C3%A1n%20Fischer,%20Christoph%20Eschenbach,%20and%20Bobby%20McFerrin,%20and%20in%20November%202013,%20will%20collaborate%20with%20Marin%20Alsop%20and%20the%20Baltimore%20Symphony%20Orchestra%20in%20performances%20of%20the%20Britten%20War%20Requiem.The%20Festival%E2%80%99s%20master%20class%20has%20been%20its%20flagship%20educational%20program%20since%20the%20event%E2%80%99s%20founding%20at%20the%20University%20of%20Oregon%20in%201970.%20The%20class%20has%20more%20than%20a%20thousand%20alumni%20leading%20choral%20organizations%20around%20the%20world.A%201985%20graduate%20of%20the%20class,%20Maclary%20is%20looking%20forward%20to%20reaching%20new%20conductors%20through%20the%20program.%20%E2%80%9CI%20know%20what%20an%20impact%20it%20can%20have%20on%20the%20musical%20lives%20of%20its%20participants,%E2%80%9D%20he%20said.%20%E2%80%9CWorking%20with%20the%20players%20and%20singers%20of%20the%20Festival%20and%20studying%20under%20the%20guidance%20of%20Helmuth%20Rilling%20was%20a%20major%20turning%20point%20in%20my%20career.%20I%20hope%20that%20I%20might%20be%20able%20to%20give%20back%20to%20the%20conducting%20students%20of%20this%20generation%20some%20significant%20measure%20of%20what%20was%20given%20to%20me.%E2%80%9DThe%202014%20class%20takes%20place%20June%2025-July%2013,%20with%20curriculum%20centering%20on%20J.S.%20Bach%E2%80%99s%20Easter%20and%20Ascension%20Oratorios,%20and%20cantatas%20BWV%204,%20Christ%20lag%20in%20Todes%20Banden,%20and%20BWV%20172,%20Erschallet,%20ihr%20Lieder.Applications%20for%20conducting%20participants%20will%20be%20accepted%20beginning%20November%204,%202013%20through%20www.oregonbachfestival.com,%20or%20call%20800.457.1486.# # #http://oregonbachfestival.com/masterclass/">www.oregonbachfestival.com, or call 800.457.1486.
