Earthsong – a secular cantata

June 5, 2010 by Christopher Marshall Leave a Comment

With the current catastrophe in the Gulf refocussing attention on the environment, this may be an ideal time to programme a work that reflects on our relationship with this planet.

Earthsong is a secular cantata that celebrates Earth – or ‘Gaia’ in the terminology of scientist James Lovelock. It describes nature in joyful, almost childlike terms. It is not a grim or overly didactic piece. Rather, it is full of lyrical, very singable melodies set against sometimes dramatic, sometimes atmospheric orchestral writing. Here is a copy of the text.

Earthsong is a 15 minute work for SATB choir, SA children’s choir and standard symphony orchestra. It was commissioned by the Glema Mahr Center of Madisonville, KY and in 2005 was given a most affecting and successful premiere by combined community and school choirs with the Murray State University Orchestra under Dennis Johnson.

    Thank you,

        Christopher
