Many of us in the choral community have conducted and performed David Fanshawe's unique African Sanctus since it's creation in 1977. To say that David was an original is understated. He was a spirited and bold man who possessed contagious enthusiasm for preserving the vanishing musical cultures of people from small African villages to Southeast Asian islands. His recorded legacy is almost unimaginable. The Catskill Choral Society and SUNY College Oneonta were privileged to have hosted he and Jane in May 2010 for two unforgettable performances with noted soprano Lorraine HInds. In typical Fanshawe fashion, David was so full of energy and enthusiasm at the rehearsals and performances. Memorial tributes are being posted to the link below. A performance of African Sanctus had been tentatively discussed for next May at Avery Fisher Hall in New York, to be promoted by DCINY.
