CWU Chamber Choir – Nirvana Dharma, Einojuhani Rautavaara (Video)

May 11, 2011 by Gary Weidenaar Leave a Comment

The Central Washington University Chamber Choir has released a video of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s “Nirvana Dharma“, for flute (played by Dr. Hal Ott, CWU faculty member), soprano solo (sung by Senior Andrea Hansen) and chorus.

Nirvana Dharma was sung by the choir at the NWACDA (Seattle) Conference in 2010.  Presenting many challenges, the 8 minute piece is based on an octatonic scale and divides into as many as 20 parts.  For a short while there are 4 conductors.

It was recorded in the CWU’s newly renamed Jerilyn S. McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall  in May, 2010 in a single take.

The video can be found on YouTube at:

The video is available by agreement with Boosey & Hawkes and the composer.
