CONDUCTING HOPE: A New PBS Documentary (Prison Choir Sings RIVER IN JUDEA)

November 25, 2013 by Julie Myers Leave a Comment

For more than twenty years, the “singing, ringing” RIVER IN JUDEA has rung out in countless voices in varied venues in many lands.  But now “the river that freely flows” has wound its way into a highly unusual place…the Lansing Correctional Facility near Kansas City, Kansas, home of the only secular men’s prison choir in the United States that performs outside of prison walls.  A new documentary follows the East Hills Singers (many of whom have never sung in a choir before) and its director, Kirk Carson, as they prepare to perform various choral works for a public audience.

ChoralNet’s own Linda Marcus, lyricist of RIVER IN JUDEA, shares:

“When I watch this choir sing a phrase like ‘hope and good will’, I feel they are coming from a place deep within their hearts.  Moments like this are why I write lyrics.  Maybe for an instant or two my words can give hope.”

CONDUCTING HOPE is currently airing on a growing number of stations in November and December 2013.
