“October 25, 2010 (Kelowna, BC)
Canadian Music Centre associate composer Stephen Chatman was awarded the Western Canadian Music Award for Classical Composition of the Year for his work Earth Songs, recorded on CMC’s Centrediscs label. Earth Songs, appearing on the disc by the same name, was recorded last year by the University of British Columbia Singers and the CBC Radio Orchestra under the direction of Alain Trudel. Earth Songs is available for purchase through the CMC’s website, where audio samples can also be found.
“I was surprised and happy, it’s very exciting,” says Chatman of his win. It is the third time since 2005 that Chatman has been honoured
with the award for Classical Composition of the Year and the sixth time a Centrediscs recording has claimed the prize since the award’s
inception in 2004.
The media has praised Earth Songs since its premiere at Vancouver’s Chan Centre in 2008, calling it, “Unapologetically dramatic…
Built up to a roaring climax that was greeted by cheers and a standing ovation.”
(Jessica Werb, The Georgia Straight, October 2, 2008)
The awards were presented in Kelowna October 23, 2010 and were part of the Breakout West Festival. Chatman’s music was heard during the festival as part of the Classical Music Showcase, presented as part of the Canadian Music Centre’s New Music in New Places
project.”
