Christmas might be one of the most beloved holidays in the world.
Its traditions could vary very much between cultures, countries, or even families – some celebrate it as a religious holiday, some as a feast of love and peace. There are so many things that could differ: choosing a Christmas tree and how to decorate it, deciding what presents to give, what to eat and what activities to do…
But there is one thing that seems to be in common:
Music is always necessary.
Any Christmas program would be unimaginable without music. Special liturgical songs are chosen for the church services on Christmas Eve; at Christmas parties and Christmas Markets some suitable background music is played; most choirs and orchestras give special concerts to celebrate the holiday; and carol singing at home next to the Christmas tree is also popular.
The relationship between this celebration and music clearly shows what a special role music plays in our lives. It can connect us to cultural and family traditions, and evokes a unique feeling in us – getting us in a Christmas mood.
What does music and this holiday mean to you? How do you celebrate; and what kind of music do you like to sing, play, or listen to?
