For anyone who is interested, I’m pleased to announce the Dr. Dwight Bigler has accepted the tenure-track position as Director of Choral Activities at Virginia Tech. Dwight had been on a 2-year temporary appointment and was a finalist when we were permitted to advertise the position nationally. We are facing continuing loss of state funding for a state land-grant university, so getting permission for faculty searches is NOT a run-of-the-mill guarantee.
I’m personally very pleased. Dr. Bigler is an energetic and very experienced young conductor who has taken a very good choral program and in the past 2 years brought it to a higher level of technical and musical performance. He works his students hard, but they love him for it. It is great to welcome him–or rather to continue to work with him–as a faculty colleague. He is also producing outstanding concerts as Artistic Director and Conductor of our Blacksburg Master Chorale, a position that is not an automatic perk of the university position but which has traditionally been filled by their Board from our choral faculty.
