SHERWOOD, AR — In the storm of 2008 many parts of Sylvan Hills
were destroyed. Those of which include the Choir room. The choir
room has a library of all of the music the school has to offer.
Some of these pieces of music date back to when the school was
first built. Needless to say Mrs. Harris, the choir teacher, was
shocked when the tornado hit. Her first thought was of the room and
the safety of all the music. Harris was sure that the tornado would
not hit the library of music, but that it would hit the other end
of the school.
That day the school lost well worth $1,500 of music. That is 253
titles of music, not to mention how many of each title there
actually were. Out of those 253 that were damaged, 42 of those
copies were out of print. This means that Harris could no longer
receive new copies of any of those 42 songs. Now that it is 2011
the school is finally getting some of the music back.
There were many turnovers in the financial department that
caused a delay in receiving any music or the money for it. After
all the turnovers in the department, the school’s files about the
damage to the music were lost. This meant that Harris had to keep
up and keep reminding the district that she still had not been
given the money to replace the lost or damaged music.
Harris said, “I hated that we lost the oldest part of our
library. It had many great pieces of music we never got to use.”
Even if the district had given the money to the school in 2008,
after the storm happened, there would still have been a possibility
that the some of the music would still have been lost or out of
print. Harris is not sure when the new music she ordered will come
in. Since the music is coming from a local company it should not
take but a few weeks to get to Sylvan Hills.
