Six singers from the Tai Wu Elementary School Chorus led by Camake Valaule performed traditional Paiwan songs at TEDx Taipei, a one-day event modeled on the TED conferences held annually in California.
Valaule was among 20 local and international speakers invited to deliver a speech on the topic of "Big Hopes for the Next Decade."
He said during his speech that because of the lack of a written language, Paiwan songs are handed down verbally from one generation to the next.
The lyrics in the ancient melodies often portray the tribe's mythology, artistry and outlook on life, he said. By learning the tunes, children are given the chance to "know who they really are and where they come from."
