11 Things to Avoid Doing at the First Choir Rehearsal

August 18, 2024 by Adam Paltrowitz Leave a Comment

Before my first day of teaching high school, the person who hired me gave me some advice. He told me exactly what to do on the first day: “Just do what you did during your demo lesson, and the students will love you!”

Unfortunately, this advice nearly ruined my entire first year and jeopardized my chances of keeping the job beyond that. As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

After more than 25 years of teaching, I still spend more time mentally planning the first rehearsal than any other. While every teacher’s situation is unique, there are certain universal mistakes that can negatively impact the start of the year.

By being aware of these potential pitfalls in advance, we can avoid them and set a positive tone for the year ahead.
