There is an art to handling these difficult situations. I’ve spent more than two decades finding an appropriate way to handle each situation.

A concert is a “summative assessment”. Participation in a concert reflects a major portion of this grade. If a student is absent from a test in another class, the understanding is that they will make up the test. For a concert, for whatever reason, they need to make up the grade. Since it is impossible, and impractical for us to reset the concert setting, I assign a two-page paper for the student to complete in lieu of concert attendance.
In a few cases, students managed to show up at the concert at the last minute. In all cases, I have been fully backed up by administration.
