Reflections on Psalms 121, 91 and 128

April 3, 2019 by ACDA Leave a Comment

This week on GBW and ACDA Radio/ChoralNet host Stan Schmidt brings you music called Reflections on Psalms 121,91, &128.  You will hear seven settings of Psalm 121, a Jewish Prayer or Kaddish and interpretations of Psalms 91, 128 and verses from Psalm 34, including musical suggestions from nine different composers and selections from Mendelssohn’s Oratorio “Elijah” in English.  You can plan on hearing settings of Psalm 121 by Walford Davies, Cyrillius Kreek, Morten Lauidsen,  and Mack Wilberg from his “Requiem”.  Also on tap is the complete Psalm as created by Samuel Scheidt scored for eight part chorus plus a version of Psalm 121 by John Rutter who wrote his version right after his famous Gloria, both which were written for the voices of Mel Olson, a community choir in Omaha, Nebraska in 1974, but was not recorded by the Cambridge singers until the year 2000 and is heard on his CD “O Praise the Lord of Heaven” from 2013.   This search of Psalm 121 comes to a conclusion with “If With All Your Hearts” , “Lift Thine eyes to The Mountains” and finally “Then Shall Your Light Shine Forth”, all three compositions being part of the famous Oratorio “Elijah” by Mendelssohn.  Those are performed by a mass group of musicians with Paul McCreesh and his recording of that masterpiece in English.   Take a listen and enjoy this pyramid of musical greatness.
