This week on GBW and ACDA Radio/ChoralNet Host Stan Schmidt brings back works by one of the greatest composers in music history. We will also discover another exhilarating composition that could be regarded as a member of the great top 40 list of choral compositions. While on his way to the U.S. our featured composer, Benjamin Britten had two movements of the work confiscated by U.S. Customs on the Suspicion of containing coded Secret Messages. This was during World War 2. Finally it was completed on November 22, 1942 the feast day for St. Cecilia and Britten’s 29thBirthday. Other works on this concert at the Choral Dances from Gloriana; The Five Flower Songs, Op 47 and the fabulous work A.M.D. G. Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God) Of course you will recall thetext was by Gerard Manley Hopkins who writes with strong rhythmic vitality to go with his complex religiosity. The Choral artists on this visit are the Collegium Vocale Zu Franziskanern, Luzern with Ulrike Grosch as conductor; The Cambridge Singers with John Rutter; plus The Rias Kammerchor from a 2019 CD with Justin Doyle on the Podium. Hope you enjoy this visit of great music and that the ACDA Convention was a great stimulation.
