It all began in 1986 when The Rev. John Gensel, the Jazz Minister at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Citycorp ask New York Musician Anne Phillips to write “A Jazz Nativity”. The result?…Bending Toward the Light – A Jazz Nativity…..plus.. hundreds of Jazz Musicians and thousands of audience members have experienced this great expression from something that is truly American….Jazz. If you have never heard this work it will be really new and exciting and even more…If you spend your time teaching the Jazz idiom day in and day out….find it and listen and then give you students and audience a fantastic experience.
Anne Phillips came out of the incubator singing and playing the piano and could pick up any tune that was on the radio and finally encountered Jazz as a senior in High School and then went on to Oberlin and joined the Jazz Club. Later she moved to NY and performed nightly in some clubs doing six hour gigs each night then became a first call singing contractor and made here way into the world of Advertising and doing commercials. So my friends give this a listen and see if you can resist doing this fun piece.
