This week Going Beyond Words on ACDA Radio and ChoralNet approaches Lenten show #3. On this sacred billboard chart are eight appropriate selections by such composers as Brahms, Schütz, William Boyce, William Byrd and Chandos #3 by George Frideric Handel. Many of the scores you will find very familiar which can be a rich experience. The Marble Choir from NYC opens with an early American musical style from the Tennessee Harmony arr. by Kenneth Dake, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross; That moves to Giestliches Lied Op 30 by Johannes Brahms which steps forward to an exquisite setting of I am the Resurrection and the Life from Sacred Konzert #2 by Schütz. The program continues with a choral reflection on Amazing Grace by Roger Ames….then Blessed be the Name of the Lord by William Boyce offered by St. Paul’s Cathedral singers and the Parley of Instruments. The Anders Paulsson stunning arrangement of Deep River for Choir and Soprano Sax with St. Jacob’s Choir and Gary Graden is followed by the classic Ave verum corpus by Byrd performed with excellence by the Choir of Merton College, Oxford. Our visit will end with a composition based on Psalm 51, Have Mercy on Me, the Chandos Anthem #3 by Handel with The Sixteen Choir and Orchestra led by Harry Christophers. Its not fancy but it perhaps will stimulate you sacred thinking.
