The Songs of Farewell by Hubert Parry

November 15, 2017 by ACDA Leave a Comment

This week on ACDA Radio and ChoralNet, Host Stan Schmidt invites you to an hour of significant Choral Music by a highly respected and revered British Composer whose centenary will be celebrated in 2018 along with end of WWI…..He was a composer, teacher and Historian of Music.    You will hear the famous “Jerusalem”, a piece that reflected the fight for right movements and to face, head on the German Propaganda of WWI….Then there is Parry’s composition “I Was Glad” that is arguably the greatest ceremonial anthem ever written.   You must also consider the fantastic, “A Blest Pair of Sirens”, the result of a commission from Charles Stanford and a piece that Sir Edward Elgar said should be… “considered amongst the noblest work of man”.    It was English Choral Historian John Bawden who said that…. “The Songs of Farewell are a persuasive reminder of Parry’s contribution to the English Choral Tradition.  The Songs of Farewell (all 6) are arranged in a carefully organized scheme of developing length and complexity. They are widely acknowledged as masterpieces of unaccompanied choral writing”.  Check it out yourself www.directoryofchoralmusic.co.uk
