This week on ACDA Radio and ChoralNet, Stan Schmidt, Host of Going Beyond Words presents a history lesson looking back 150 years for a view of our Westward expansion and the music that went along with the growth of the United States. Do you know the state song of Kansas? Well you’ll hear that too as you listen to a broadcast titled Westward Ho! Songs of The American Cowboy. Performers are Burl Ives, Salli Terri, The Jack Halloran Quartet, The Roger Wagner Chorale, The Norman Luboff Choir and the Sons of the pioneers.
Our Cowboy travels begin in Alabama with Oh Susanna by Stephen Foster Sung by the Roger Wagner Chorale. While our trip will take us all the way to the Banks of the Sacramento, your host’s home town, choral directors check this program out. Take it as a history reminder and enjoy the singers of the Cowboy literature and perhaps you will find yourself whistling a song or two and want to try some of the songs with your ensembles. A lot different than Bach and Beethoven, but all American.
