ChorTeach Preview: Fall 2016

ChorTeach is ACDA’s quarterly online magazine for choral directors and music educators. The articles in each issue are gleaned from ACDA state and division newsletters and from submissions. ChorTeach is specifically designed for those who work with amateur singers and are looking for practical material to apply to classrooms and rehearsals.

Ronald Staheli: Exemplary Music Evaluator by David Williams

This article is built on a case study consisting of several years of observations and interviews demonstrating how retired director Ronald Staheli uses regular and appropriate forms of evaluation to encourage himself and choir members to self-evaluate in order to facilitate improvement as musicians and life in general.

Global Music in Christian Worship by Jeff Clouser

In an era of increasing globalization, this article suggests that including global music in worship services is one way to learn how people all over the world worship God and creates a worship environment that is welcoming to those from other cultures and countries. The author provides suggestions for repertoire, style, and songbooks from around the world.

The Benefits of Singing—Resources for Conductors by Fern L. Burnett

Researchers have become increasingly interested in investigating what happens when an individual regularly participates in a singing ensemble. This article consists of specific sources available on the internet that are intended to help foster this discussion between the choir director and his or her singers.

The author of this article shares the results of an informal survey on communal singing that she conducted with her thirty-member ensemble, Kantorei, the chapel choir at Valparaiso University.
