If you direct a youth choir, now is a great time to advocate for your choir to sing with an orchestra in 2016.  Build a relationship with your local community or high school orchestra.  Attend their holiday concert and shake the conductor’s hand after the event. Then show them this piece.  It will be a win-win for both organizations.  The carols are the ones everyone knows.  Between your kids’ families and those that just love to hear and see children at Christmas, you should pack the audience in.

With a friendly, supportive but musically demanding conductor, kids can learn a lot about musical performance when they sing with an orchestra — listening for their pitch with so many different timbres, singing in time, projecting their voices into the hall to get a good balance, being expressive and dramatic, being efficient and “professional” in rehearsal. If they haven’t had much musical exposure, it might be the first time they’ve been close to instrumentalists. If it’s an adult orchestra, they can feel very grown up as they participate in a big endeavor. Whether it’s a volunteer adult chorus or a children’s chorus, all of the local choruses who have sung with us have grown musically. My orchestra is the Concord Orchestra in Massachusetts, where I play in the horn section.
