I had the opportunity to sing under Jester Hairston in the summer of 1971 at a music camp in Massanetta Springs, Virginia. He was a tremendous conductor, musician, and person. I also saw him once at a restaurant in Martinsville, Virginia when he was attending a Hairston Family Reunion, a reunion that included both African-American and Caucasian family members. We recently sang his arrangement of “Amen” in worship at the First Baptist Church of Shreveport, LA.
