Indeed. Strange, though, how we assume intelligence based solely on accents, dialects. Easy trap to fall into! Personally, I love the sounds of all the accents in America. They can be so musical. And when a foreigner speaks English with his/her own accent—how sweet!!!! I think it might be a great idea to teach students learning a language how to speak English with that accent FIRST, then continue on with teaching the language sounds themselves. You know….start with the known (English and certain other accents), then proceed to the unknown (new language). Often, when I feel like I’m losing class attention, I switch to a German accent or Italian or French and “Voila”….they are listening. Weird. But then, humans are weird creatures, anyway……LOL I hope America never goes to the idea that only one accent is allowed here. What a joke. Hmmm, all this from one commercial….they do make one think….
