FIVE FROM THE FOLDER: JUNIOR HIGH & MIDDLE SCHOOL by Laurel Farmer

 

1.  “Chili Caliente.” David Giardiniere, Three-part mixed. Shawnee Press 35027085

Peppy little song about chili peppers, nods to Rossini’s “Barber of Seville,” elicits smiles from singers and audience alike.  Percussion could easily be played by choir members.  Teaches staccato, tenuto, and triplets.

 

2. “Deck the Nutcracker Hall.”  Arr. Greg Gilpin.  Two-Part. Alfred 19198

Fun holiday piece creatively incorporates lyrics of “Deck the Hall” with Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” melody. A fun way to incorporate music history, and also a great teaching piece for minor key signature and dynamics.

 

3. “Shine Your Light.” Greg Gilpin. SAB. Shawnee Press 35026757

Inspirational song with a gospel feel.  Interest is added to a somewhat repetitive lyric line by modulating twice and crescendoing to an exciting ending.  Opportunities for student soloists and fun descant.

 

4. “We Rise Again.” Arr. Stephen Smith.  SSAA. Cypress Choral Press CP 1143

This beautiful song from Canada is a favorite with my junior high choir.  Starting off in three parts, it splits into four parts just before a modulation and build up to a brief a cappella section.  This is a truly moving piece!

 

5. “Will You Teach Me?” Victor C. Johnson. Three-part mixed.  Heritage Music Press 15/2549H

Communicates a powerful message about love and guidance to those who influence the lives of children.  Manageable ranges for junior high voices, especially males.  Optional oboe part can be played by a student.
