March 7, 2014 by Scott Dorsey Leave a Comment

COMPOSITION SPOTLIGHT ~ by Jack Senzig

(Each week we look at one or two of the best choral works posted in the Composition Showcase here on ChoralNet.  This is where we store a treasure trove of works that your choirs will love to sing and your audiences will love to hear.)

Frozen In by Dale Trumbore for SSA piano and violin (Click here for PDF and here for AUDIO)

Level: High School Intermediate
Uses: Winter Concert
Program Themes: Snow, Ice, Beauty, Winter, Senses
This Piece Would Program Well With: Snow Edward Elgar available from JWPepper and Sheet Music Plus.

This is no Disney song.  Frozen In is high art!   I was hooked in the first measure of the recording and willingly allowed myself to be reeled in by unmitigated loveliness.    What a treat to add violin to the stellar piano writing!  The harmonics project a chilling crystalline resonance to an already frigid ambiance.

Dale Trumbore’s Frozen In glistens like the sun on a snowy bank, sending sparkles of blue, red and green to dazzle our senses.   I will be looking for more works by this talented composer.

The poem is by Annie Finch and can be found here: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/238498
