COMPOSITION SPOTLIGHT ~ by Jack Senzig

(Each week we look at one or two of the best choral works posted in the Composition Showcase here on ChoralNet.  This is where we store a treasure trove of works that your choirs will love to sing and your audiences will love to hear.)

Always by Rick Bartlett for SSA and piano (Click here for PDF and here for AUDIO)

Level: High School Intermediate
Uses: General Concert Use
Program Themes: First Love, Longing
This Piece Would Program Well With: Show Angels also by Rick Bartlett available on the Composition Showcase

Do you teach high school because you love the pure raw emotions that are on the sleeve of every one of your singers? Do you love being a part of your singer’s lives right at the time they are changing from children to adults? Do you feel like a wizard when you bring those emotions out, channel them through your art and lead your students to feats of magical musical expression?  Always is one of the spells you need in your wand!

The homophonic structure, beautiful lyric line and harmony make Always perfect for intermediate level high school women’s ensembles.  It is short, with just enough challenges to stretch the girls while keeping them interested in the passionate writing.  They will FEEL the painful love that exudes from this song deeply and completely.

Lunchtime in the choir room will be filled with the opening piano part being played and shared by aspiring musicians.  This could plant the seeds to focus one of your young ladies on the way to her music career.

They are going to love it!

Always is available from the composer through email crickb88(a)cox.net
