Lars Edlund (1922-2013)

February 14, 2014 by Joshua Bronfman Leave a Comment

We lost another of influential member of the Swedish Choral Miracle at the end of last year. Lars Edlund, who wrote some phenominal choral music, including his Gloria, one of my all time favorites, passed away in December. I can’t find a recording of the Gloria online to share, but it was recorded by Eric Ericson on the album Swedish Contemporary Vocal Music – Vol. II. He was a very underrated composer. His music was performed much more in the 80s and 90s, but I haven’t seen it out there much in the last 15 years. It still deserves to be performed.

If you want a challenging piece for your college choir (and you have a great tenor), his Gloria is a wonderful, non-tonal, 20th century piece that is a little out there, but interesting and not crazy hard. If you want something more tonal with a lighter, humourous touch, and within the grasp of advanced high school groups, try his Two Scandinavian Folks Songs. Great stuff. I wish I had recording for you…maybe some Choralnet folks have personal recordings they could share clips of…

Josh, I also love the music of Lars Edlund (as well as his Modus Novus — well, perhaps I don’t LOVE it, but it’s incredibly useful!).

The folksongs (if you’re thinking of the set with Femton Finner) are on Naxos on a recording by the Uppsala University Chamber Choir. They’re fun!

They’re also published by Walton — I don’t have a copy, so am not sure if they’re Swedish and English, or just in English translation.

Thanks for information Joshua:   I have played that Gloria on my Choral Radio Show three times in the last 20 years.    I still have an LP with that piece on it done by the Dale Warland Singers.   Looks like I will have to program some music by Lars Edlund in the future.   Thanks Again.
