Five from the Folder – High School Contest/Festival Selections
1. “All That Hath Life and Breath, Praise Ye the Lord,” René Clausen, Mark Foster 223
Joyful concert opening with bright tertian harmonies. Good introduction to aleatoric style.
2. “Cloudburst,” Eric Whitacre, Walton HL08500165
Theatrical. Complex, but very rewarding to teach and learn. Percussion, piano and handbell parts are all playable by choir members.
3. “Lamentations of Jeremiah,” Z. Randall Stroope, Alliance AMP0356
Dramatic setting with exciting themes requiring rhythmic and textual precision. Boisterous piano accompaniment.
4. “O Magnum Mysterium,” David Childs, Santa Barbara SBMP211
Mixes contemporary harmonies with early music style. Middle section features chant singing. Requires beautiful tone and sustained singing.
5. “Ubi Caritas,” Ola Gjello, Walton HL08501631
Expressive, lyric setting with contemporary harmonies. Limited ranges. Gorgeous “Amen” section.
