COMPOSITION SPOTLIGHT ~ by Jack Senzig

(Each week we look at one or two of the best choral works posted in the Composition Showcase here on ChoralNet.  This is where we store a treasure trove of works that your choirs will love to sing and your audiences will love to hear.)

Ave Maria by Ryan Stennes for SSA a cappella (Click here for PDF and here for AUDIO)

Level: Advanced High School Higher
Uses: General Concert Use
Program Themes: Comparing Ave Marias
This Piece Would Program Well With:  Ave Maria by Caccini/Keuning available from Sheet Music Plus

Perhaps younger people take the connectivity of the Internet for granted.  Those of us of a certain age never cease to be amazed.  I regularly seek out composers whose works I admire and invite them to join us in the Composers of Choral Music Community on ChoralNet.  Today’s Silver Platter Award Winner posted his piece to a forum on Reddit that I frequent.  I invited him to join us and share his piece with the community.   If we hadn’t virtually bumped into each other, you may not have had the opportunity to hear this wonderful work.

This short little gem would be an excellent addition to any concert program. It is available by emailing the composer at

It’s a beautiful piece- but definitely not SSA– unless someone has been doing some interesting experiments on altos lately…?
Also– how as this recorded? It has a unique sounding quality to it. I’d love to know how it was done.
Thanks for sharing, Jack and Ryan!
