Stick Time: Get Those Ears Back in Shape

December 20, 2013 by Scott Dorsey Leave a Comment

For most of us the mid-year break is, or soon will be, over.  It’s time to reawaken our ears, to recall what it is we’re supposed to be listening for in rehearsal.

Here is a recording from an ACDA national conference.  Play this performance three times, listening for a different musical item each time.  Some possibilities for your sonic attention might be balance, blend, vowel unification, vibrato, audible breaths, dynamic contrast, phrase structures, consistency of attacks and releases, etc.  Get those ears back in shape before you walk into your first rehearsal!
