(Each week we look at one or two of the best choral works posted in the Composition Showcase here on ChoralNet. This is where we store a treasure trove of works that your choirs will love to sing and your audiences will love to hear.)
Chanukah Tonight by David Avshalomov SATB, Piano, Mandolin, String or Balalaika Orchestra
Level: Advanced Middle School or Higher
Uses: Winter Holiday Concert
Program Themes: Chanukah, Light
This Piece Would Program Well With: Celebration of Light by Joseph Martin available from JWPepper or Sheet Music Plus
I know you have already planned your holiday music for the year. However, I like planning the next year while my mind is focused on the same theme. I always find a piece that I think “Should have done that one!” after it is too late to add to the repertoire. Chanukah Tonight is a lively, rhythmic and fun piece that will get your singers and audience smiling.
The thing that really caught my attention is the suggested accompaniment. I live near The Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra. The possibility of performing with them is very attractive. Do you have an untapped resource for collaboration? Sometimes repertoire can inspire us to think outside of our usual box. Combining together can help with expanding your audience and can provide new and valuable experiences for your singers and families.
